A Day to Give Thanks... and The Great M&M Caper

Thanksgiving... it's my very favorite holiday.

Who doesn't love a holiday focused on eating, relaxing and hanging out all day?? It's genius.

So I was really excited to spend the holiday down in Springfield with my family.

We got up on Thursday and hit the road early at 7am. Owen always sleeps in the morning, so we've found this is the best way for us to drive long distances... so none of our ears bleed from continual screaming from the backseat.

We got to my parents and treated ourselves to coffee and hot cocoa! Then there was a game of CandyLand with Gamma... The day was off to a good start for Austin.

We had a couple of early nappers while the Macy's Parade was on..

I nibbled on the turkey my parents always make at their house and Austin decided he wanted to try some.. and he loved it! Then he wanted his own helping of turkey. In a cup. That he ate it with a spoon.

Good ol' Cup-o-Turkey...

Then we got dressed and went over to my Grandma's for Thanksgiving Linner.. (we have an early dinner, so it's like lunch, but dinner.. so it's linner).

Austin went fishing with Uncle Brian, and played bus to my not-so-amused (or possibly napping again) Dad..

Owen snacked on some milk and Mommy's thumb, and got some Great-Gramama loving..

We had an awesome linner... then the Great M&M Caper hit..

We were all at the table. Austin ate some turkey and green beans and a roll and said he was all full and asked to be excused.

We let him be excused and he went back into the front room and we heard him play. There wasn't anything he could get into in there (so we thought) so we all finished eating.

We heard him playing.. and then silence.

Never a good sign.

So my Dad leaves the table to go check on him and I hear him say "I think he went outside!!!"

Oh no, there is a sliding door leading to the backyard, but it was locked and bolted and Austin can't unlock it. Still, there was a second of panic..

Right after my Dad said that, he said "Austin!" and up popped this little head from behind the side of the couch.

Where he was hiding.

Why was he hiding? Because he took the bowl of M&M's off my Grandma's coffee table, squatted behind the side of the couch and was shoveling them in his mouth.

My Dad said he had chipmunk cheeks full of chocolate.

Neal went in there to talk to him and discipline him.. and the rest of us in the dining room.. lost it. We were laughing so hard we were crying.

I mean, he didn't really do anything that bad or hurt anything.. and the fact that he thought this whole thing through, hid to eat the candy.. well, it was hilarious.

Candy dishes are just too much temptation for little ones..

Needless to say, he was wound up after that and a bit naughty... I mean, he had to be practically VIBRATING after all that candy.

Back at my parent's house.. still wound up.. and he's in the guest bedroom playing in the Pack-n-Play Owen sleeps in. Neal is in there with him, putting books back on the bookshelf that Austin took off. Before he knew it, he saw Austin's legs fly by his face.

Austin had JUMPED out of the Pack-n-Play, hit his head on a metal decor thingy my Mom had next to the bookshelf, and split his head open a bit.

I had to clean off the blood (the wound was very small) and Austin was HYSTERICAL.

My Dad ran to Walgreen's to get kid's pain reliever because he had a knot on the back of his head too. Austin got medicine and went straight to bed.

So the day started with an overload of candy, and ended with blood.

I mean, a normal day in parenting.. right??
