The Boob vs. The Bottle

Oh, the great breast-feeding debate.

When you become a Mom you quickly find out that there is a huge battle being fought out in Mommyland regarding what is the best way to feed your baby... boob or bottle?

Of course, we all know breast milk is best. It has everything baby needs, it travels along with you, it establishes a bond between Mom and baby, and on and on and on. There are die-hard breastfeeding advocacy groups out there that shun formula and encourage breastfeeding until your child is going to enter Kindergarten.

This overzealous community of breastfeeders out there, however; can very quickly make a susceptible person such as myself, feel guilty about any breastfeeding difficulties that may arise....

It was always my intention to breastfeed Austin. There was really no other option in my mind. I knew it would be inconvenient at times, and exhausting, and frustrating... but I knew the rewards would be a healthy happy baby.

Well.... what do you do if you are breastfeeding and you don't have that happy baby everyone said you'd have? And you just keep running into issues such as...

-not having a large milk supply
-having slow let down (as in, your milk doesn't flow out very fast)
-having a very slow nurser
-having a gassy fussy baby
-and having a fussy, fussy (did I mention FUSSY????) baby

I'm at a crossroads. Austin is 1 month old and other than about a week where we had to supplement him with formula to get rid of his jaundice, my boobs have been at his beck and call and he's exclusively breastfed. I'm doing my Mommy duty and giving him (what I hope) is everything he needs.

Well, sadly....all the issues I mentioned above are my breastfeeding reality. I have wracked my brain over and over trying to figure out why my baby isn't happy... why he is fussy and crying (and a lot of the times screaming) whenever he is awake... and grunting and groaning and moaning and waking himself up when he's sleeping??

Maybe I'm not producing enough milk and he's hungry?
Well, I've tried milk production cookies, pumping to increase my supply, and fenugreek to pump up my supply. So far I still have not turned into a milk cow. I nurse him whenever he acts hungry, even if I just nursed him 20 mins earlier...still he fusses, cries and cries...

Maybe something I'm eating is transferring to him and giving him gas?
I cut out dairy (the #1 culprit in newborn gas) and he still fusses and grunts in pain every day.. usually for hours.

So... what do I do?

Do we soldier through and hope that he grows out of it, or that things improve?

Or do I cave and start supplementing him with formula again... in hopes that the combo of giving him more food and giving him something that doesn't have my body chemistry (and whatever is in my milk that is upsetting his tummy) will lead to a happier baby (and happier Mommy)?

I can't help it though.. I feel guilty giving him formula. Really really guilty. I feel like since I am producing milk and since I can breastfeed him, I should breastfeed.. and only breastfeed him, even if that means we spend ALL DAY doing nothing but nursing.

The fact that I don't have a happy milk-drunk baby that is a result of just my breast milk makes me feel like a failure of a woman. I'm sad and frustrated that my body is apparently not doing what it should be doing to make life for Austin a happy existence.

Is formula the "Saving Grace" I've been seeking?? Would one or two bottles of formula a day, on top of nursing, help his disposition? I know it would help on days like today where I nursed him every 30 mins and spent the non-nursing minutes trying massages, baths, leg pumps, back patting, soothing, gas drops, and everything else I could think of to help his tummy.

I am waving the white Mommy flag and saying "ok! I give! I need help! My baby is unhappy everyday... I'm frazzled and worn out and my brain is out of ideas on how to help him..."

But is introducing formula the solution????

I don't know if I can get over the guilt hurdle that is in front of me... I know a lot of Moms give there babies formula, and I'm not in anyway judging them... but I feel like if I start supplementing Austin on formula.. I myself will be judged by all those who are so pro-breastfeeding they view formula as evil.

Any fellow Mommies out there have any advice?

One Month of the Great Bambino!

One month down...

Only 216 more months to go until he's 18...

:-)

I meant to post this on Friday, the little dude's actual 1-month birthday, but my darling Nealo took me out for our first post-baby date! His parents watched Austin for a few hours and I was surprised with dinner at a swanky sushi restaurant.. my hubby remembered how much I craved sushi throughout my pregnancy and saw to it that I was filled up with raw salmon!

Anyways... here is a little recap of Austin at 1-month:

-Our little dude weighs a whopping 8lbs, 15.4oz! He is too long for almost all of his newborn sized pajamas and onesies, but still a bit small for 3 month size. He's still in newborn sized pants. We are going to do a picture each month of him next to his cool Cubbies Pillow Pet so we can watch him grow!

-He is still very oral. We had a slight panic last week when we lost two of his favorite binkies and were down to only one. Mad dash to Target to buy more.. must plug baby up so silence can ensue...

- He is awake almost the whole day now... from about 9am to about 2pm he's awake and checking out this crazy world. I usually soothe him to sleep in the late afternoon and he'll take a long 3 hour nap. He sleeps pretty well at night (thankfully), with 3 hour chunks of sleeping.

-Oh, and we've started this new cool thing.. spitting up/puking after each meal. Hence the bib in the picture above. I'm pretty sure we were close to needing an exorcism one day.. I was about to call in an old priest and a young priest.

- Mr. Austin does NOT like the following things one bit:
Having his diaper changed (holy ear-splitting screaming hell!)
Having clothes taken on or off
Being pulled off the boob before he is ready
Being set down if he is in a cuddle mood

- Mr. Austin LOVES the following things a lot:
Riding in the car
Scratching Mom while he nurses
Nursing
Baths
Nursing
Cuddling with us in bed
Nursing
If only car rides could last forever...
-I've tried out the front pack with him and it has become our new favorite thing! Austin will snuggle right down into it and start cooing and fall asleep almost instantly. This has been great for me if I need a break during the day. I'll just wear him around the house while I get something to eat, pick up, clean the house, or whatever.

- He is starting to smile, and does so a lot while he sleeps or when he's awake sucking on his binky. He's not quite responsive in his smiles yet... even though a few times I've been talking to him and he'll give me a little grin. Love it!!!
I got you to wake up at 3am Mommy! Isn't that funny??

- Our kiddo is totally noisy and constantly grunts, coos, snorts, fusses or makes these odd Michael Jackson-type "ee-hee" noises. I think he will grow up to be a beat-boxer.

And here is a little update on Austins slave...oh, uh.. I mean, his Mom:

- I am still down 30 pounds of baby weight... and left with 25 pounds of who knows what (oh yeah... all those trips to Dairy Queen I took while pregnant...) to lose. I am nursing around the clock, but it seems like everything I am going to lose from nursing has already come off and now I have to work at losing the rest. this would be no problem if my child actually let me put him down long enough to do a workout...

- I am 90% healed from my stitches. No more pain, no more swelling... just a little bit discomfort. I have graduated from feeling like a horse kicked me in the crotch to feeling more like a squirrel kicked me in the crotch.

- Other than a few bad days where I've broken down in tears of frustration, my mood has been great and I feel like myself... just a bigger, sloppier, more half-naked version of myself. :-)

700 Hours

That is, on average, how much sleep you lose in the first year of having a baby.

That is 29 days.

So basically, a whole month of sleep- gone.

Like any other new Mom, I am not getting my blissful 8-9 hours of shut-eye a night like I did pre-baby. Right now I am kicking myself in the ass for all those Saturday mornings when I leaped out of bed at 7am so I could "tackle the day" instead of snoozing and being lazy until noon. What the hell was I thinking???

Oh sure, the advice everyone gives you is great in theory... "just sleep when the baby sleeps." Sounds like a good plan, right? And you spend your pregnancy envisioning blissful afternoon naps with a sweet infant snuggled in your arms, or peacefully asleep in their perfectly decorated nursery.

Ok, I actually had to stop typing there for a second because I was laughing at myself so hard.

In my 4 weeks of parenthood experience, there is no "sleeping when the baby sleeps"... you wanna know why?

Well, for the first week or so you are so worried that your child is just going to stop breathing at any given moment that you just sit there and stare at them the whole time they are sleeping.. making sure their lungs are doing what they are supposed to be doing.

Then, when you finally calm down a little bit about the functionality of their organs... they get a bit older and more mature and just down right stop sleeping so much.

Like our dear little Austin.

Who, on most days, does not sleep during the day for longer than 20 mins every few hours or so.

These so-called "breaks" while he is sleeping are now my highly anticipated bathroom breaks, dishwasher unloading breaks, or my one and only chance to brush my teeth and put on a bit of deodorant so I don't start smelling like the Saturday Market (no offense to all hippies...).

And at night? Well, we have our good nights where he'll let us have a few 3-hour chunks of sleep
(oh the glory of 3 whole hours!!!!) but then we have our bad nights too. You don't want to know about those... you can just take one look at the bags under my eyes and draw your own conclusions.

Oh sorry... that was just me nodding off again... :-)

You Know You Are a Mom When....

- You blow your nose on a breast pad because it's the only thing laying around.

- Showers suddenly become the most mind-blowing "just for me" 10 mins of your life. You finally get the significance of that lame "Calgon- Take me away!!!" slogan from the 80's.

- Your new perfume is Eau de Spit-up.

- You realize it is 4 pm and there is something you haven't done yet:
A) Brushed your teeth
B) Put on deodorant
C) Gotten out of your bathrobe
D) All of the above.
**Take a wild guess on which is the answer**

- You feel a wild sense of accomplishment if you get one task completed in a day.... like unloading the dishwasher.

- Your make-up starts to look foreign to you.... what are these strange pots of color, anyways??

-You have no idea what day it is... Wednesday? Sunday? Does it really matter?

- Your life becomes a game of "Choose Your Own Mis-Adventure"... Baby's asleep! Quick! What do you do??? Do you go into the kitchen to get something to eat, only to get half-way thru a bowl of cereal.... or do you pick up the house like a mad person... knowing it will just get messy again in an hour?

- You know you could kick any competition's butt in a "Get Shit Done One-Handed While Holding/Burping/Feeding A Newborn" contest.

And just because every blog needs a picture...

Newborn Daze... 2 Weeks!

Well, we have survived 2 weeks with a newborn.

For anyone who has children, you know why I am feeling a sense of accomplishment at this.

I have come to the conclusion that whenever women of an older generation give you parenting advice or tell you to "enjoy every second" of having a baby, their minds are reverting back to the time when their babies were a few months old, and actually sleeping for chunks of time... not a few weeks old and squalling and screaming every second they are awake.... because I'm here to tell the truth.

And the truth is... the first 2 weeks of having a baby are NOT the most funnest, most stupendous time in your life.

Good thing babies are cute as hell or no one would have children.

Ok, so now that I've vented about my squalling, screaming newborn... here are some tidbits about Austin in his first 2 weeks of life:

-He is VERY oral and talkative. Austin must have something in his mouth at all times, whether its me, a pacifier, his hand, his sleeve, a blanket.. something. And if he isn't in a dead sleep, he is grunting, snorting, jabbering, or screaming. Constantly.

-He is very strong, and when I hold him to my chest he pushes back and holds his head up and can swing his head from side to side. He also uses his super baby strength in our not-so-fun game of "push Mom's boob away 15 times in a row when nursing and make her really frustrated and start to cry." He's such a bully.

-He is a multiple sneezer, which is adorable! If he sneezes we wait for it.. because there is more than one to come. The most he's had in a row so far is six sneezes!

-He LOVES to nurse and has made me a slave to my boobs. He nurses anywhere from 15 mins to 45 mins every 2-3 hours.. so all I do is nurse. Neal commented that I am running a "tittie bar" because I sit around the house topless all day. So if anyone wants to come over and throw some dollar bills my way.....

-He loves to stretch his little legs out while he nurses and spread his toes.

-He absolutely HATES to be changed and diaper changes are possibly the most horrible moments in his little day. Neal and I usually tag team his big diaper changes since one person has to take care of the mess and the other person has to keep his binky plugged into his mouth and convince him that the world is not ending and that everything will be ok, and that if he would just be quiet we'll buy him a puppy one day. He's not falling for it though.
sigh. they want to change my diaper AGAIN???? oh, the injustice!!

-He sleeps very erratically...which I have been told by his Dr. and a lactation specialist, is very normal for a newborn. He'll sleep anywhere from 20 min stretches to 3 1/2 hours... with no rhyme or reason as to what causes the long sleep periods and what causes the short sleep periods. All we've been able to conclude from our extensive research is that if it is dark out and past midnight, 20 mins is usually all we get.
We don't see this often...

-He prefers to be held while sleeping, but we are in training to get him used to sleeping on his own.. so poor Mommy and Daddy can actually get a bit of shut eye and not get stuck holding him in the armchair at 3am.. trying to doze off while he's happily in dreamland. So how is this training going, you ask?
Austin- 12    Parents- 0

-He makes the funniest "stink face" when he is mad... one eye will scrunch up, and he'll sneer with his mouth on that same side. He looks like a pirate. Yar....

-He loves to have his arms up near his face, but is still in that phase where his arms will startle him awake... "oh god! what the???? whhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" Unfortunately, he doesn't really like to be swaddled, so his arms just flail about causing all kinds of ruckus.
Living the thug life already...

And just because I'm vain... here is how poor ol' Mommy is doing, 2 weeks in:

-I am down 30lbs! I'm at 175, down from 207 (whoa). I have 25 more pounds to lose... 20 from the pregnancy, and 5 additional, since I was a bit heavier when I got pregnant then I'd like to be.

-I have no stretch marks on my belly, but I have patches of stretch marks on both my upper thighs. I got so swollen, so quickly in my 3rd trimester that my thighs exploded.

-My stitches are dissolving and I'm healing well from my tears... even though some days it still feels like I got kicked in the crotch by a horse. Who ever said women were the weaker sex??? Obviously no one who ever pushed a baby out, that's who...

Well, that is how our first 2 weeks have gone... Neal is now back to work and I am on my own... so excuse me, I must go take my top off again...

The Unexpected

Life is all about expecting the unexpected, right?

I think this is never more true than when you are pregnant, give birth, and survive your first week at home with a newborn.

So what, you ask.... are these little unexpected events? Let me tell ya... (and you know me by now.. I hold nothing back!!!)

1. I did not poop on the table giving birth. I totally expected to. I mean, how could you not?? All that pushing.. things are bound to appear. This was one aspect about giving birth that didn't phase me. I know girls who are and/or were terrified about pooping on the table. That was the least of my worries, I just figured it would happen... but it didn't.

2. My IV hurt 100 times worse than the epidural. I was so terrified about the epidural needle going into my back that I would hyperventilate just thinking about it. But seeing the lovely "track mark" bruises up and down both my arms from my veins not cooperating for my IV, and how sore that spot was for days... I'll take the needle I couldn't feel at all in my spine any old day.

3. I didn't yell at Neal. I thought I was going to to much that I started pre-apologizing to him months before Austin's birth... "you know whatever I may say while I'm in labor is totally pain related, right? That I don't mean what may come out of my mouth, right?" I expected to be that lady screaming "YOU DID THIS TO ME YOU BASTARD!!!" and cursing the day I met this evil man who got me pregnant. But... nope. Neal was my rock and my comfort the entire time and totally escaped my wrath.

4. That men are men. No matter what. Even when their post-labor pathetic wives ask them nicely to put the toilet seat down so shuffling to the bathroom would be easier on her poor, wrecked soul... but men are still men. And the toilet seat was always up.
And to think I even let him watch sports in the hospital room...

5. I didn't think we'd get no sleep at night. I know, how stupid could I be, right???? But I read that most babies out-of-womb actions mimic their in-womb actions. Austin always slept through the night. He never moved at night or in the early morning. Ever. And now I've learned not to believe crap that you read.

6. That all the cliches are true. You do forget about the pain of labor quickly, and you do feel this immense bond and love with this little wrinkly creature and you realize you would do anything for him.

7. Baby clothes are adorable.. and a huge pain in the ass. Especially on newborns, and especially on my little dink of a 7lb newborn. Since all the nurses, doctors and lactation ladies suggest it's best for him to nurse skin-to-skin with me, Austin just ends up being unclothed a lot. And don't worry Mom... I do put clothes on him to take him outside.
Cute.. but now I have to get him out of this...
8. My baby looks nothing like me. At all. He is 100% mini-Neal in every way. Nine months of carrying that baby inside me and I get no credit in the looks department! Even Austin's left ear has the same exact bend in it that Neal's left ear does... So... you are welcome Neal and the whole Glynn family, for cooking you a perfect heir.

9. I didn't expect my whole body to feel like it was hit by a train. Sure, I knew giving birth would be no picnic, but I pushed so hard I pulled my arm muscles (from holding my legs back), pulled something in my back, and popped my sternum or a rib out of whack... something that makes my chest feel like its crushed in. On the bright side, this might get me out of working out for several more weeks...

10. I didn't expect to love something that looked like this... so very much. :-)
Gas bubble or pooping... you make the call!
