Well, last month I was all tooting the horn of "we are on the downhill slope of the hard baby days!!" I should know by now... DO NOT TOOT YOUR OWN HORN ABOUT HOW THINGS ARE BOUND TO GET EASIER BECAUSE THEY WON'T.
The last month was hard.
Not only were we all sick (Owen 3 times total), but there was fussing and crying and not sleeping, and injuries and pain. Sigh.
But nevertheless, we survived and here is where we are at...
Growing
-Weighs almost 18lbs. He was 17lbs 14oz a few weeks ago at a last-minute Dr's appt to see if he had an ear infection (he didn't).
-Wears all 9 month onesies and 9 or 12 month pants.
-One bottom tooth is about halfway popped through, and the other bottom tooth is just about to break the surface. Austin got teeth early and fast.. a few days and they were poked through. With Owen.. its a long, slow, torturous process. The first tooth he got appeared over a month ago and still isn't all the way through yet. Hey, teeth.. get with the program!!! Hurry up!!! You are causing all of us to suffer!!!! In other words, Owen has been very very VERY cranky.
-Speaking of cranky, have I mentioned he's been cranky? haha. We've had days of almost non-stop crying (ahem, last Sunday)... me trying to hold him, shush him, cold teethers for him to chew on, frozen blueberries in his self-feeder, teething tabs, Tylenol, cuddles, naps.. nothing is really helping. Poor guy.. he just crawls after me fussing and crying.
-He can climb the stairs! And unfortunately, fell off this first stair landing faster than we blinked and got a bruise on his forehead...and cried and cried... time for the baby gate again!
-Stands. All the time. That's all he wants to do. Pull up on the couch, up on the ottoman, the chair, the dishwasher (oooh... there are fun magnets on this thing!!) the patio door, our legs (Neal loves it when he uses his leg hair to pull up!!)... whatever. His favorite is to pull up on the couch and grin and smack at Austin, much to Austin's chagrin. "Mommy!! Get baby Owen away! I don't want him touching me!"
| This picture perfectly captures the truth in our house. Owen standing and grinning about something, and Austin grumbling about it in the background. Haha! |
-Responds to his name, knows I'm Mama (even though he won't say Mama anymore, he looks at me or lunges for me if I ask "who is Mama?").
-Claps his hands (so cute!) and puts his arms up in the air when he play the "So Big!!" game.
-Babbles ALL the time.. mostly "bla bla bla.." It's kinda hilarious to watch him crawl around just going "bla bla bla. Blabla bla bla." He also makes a "ya ya" noise, a "brwa" noise and a "da" noise. Oh, and he screeches. A lot. It's most adorable when he sees me at the end of the day and screeches as I pick him up!
Eating
-He is a champ at purees...just like Austin was.. and lo and behold.. is having trouble with texture, just like Austin did. It might be contributed lately to his teething and sore mouth, but he will turn his head and shake his head "no" if he gets any texture/solid/chunk food. He wants purees. Carrot by far is his favorite. I've been making his food and having fun with it.. I made a carrot/blueberry combo that was a huge hit.
-He is still willing to try anything and everything though, so I let him taste pretty much everything we eat... turkey burgers, pasta and sauce, bread, even lemons! He loved the lemons! Like really loved.
-He still gets 6oz bottles. He is all formula now and is doing fine with it. He knows the word "ba-ba" for bottle and gets excited when we say it, or start making a bottle. He'll reach for it while we are making it. Austin likes to feed him too.
-He loves to self feed, and wants to put the spoon in his mouth himself, and loves those yogurt drops.
Sleeping
-Haha. Oh, sleep....
-He goes to bed at 7:30 every night. Neal puts him to bed because he just does not go down that well if I do it. Some nights he'll fuss and babble for a bit and then fall asleep, other nights he's out right away.
-He still wakes up at night.. usually once, sometimes (like last night) twice. Sometimes it's a bit of crying over a lost binkie and then he'll find one and go back to sleep, sometimes it's screaming that only a bottle will soothe. He's very unpredictable.. .which is tough and makes it hard for me to sleep because I get anxious wondering when and if he will wake up screaming.
-Naps still aren't great either. 20 mins here, 25 mins there.. he gets a cumulative 2.5-3 hours of napping at school. At home, he's fairly good about a morning nap but not always.
-I keep telling myself I will look back at this and laugh at how bad of a sleeper this kid was.
Playing
-Toys are like, so last month guys... who wants to play with toys??? Now that he's moving, Owen would much rather get into everything else other than toys.. Ohh the pantry! The fridge! This dog food looks cool. And the dog's water.. oh! a dirty shoe!!! Big Brother's tiny Batman figurines!!!
-When wants something, he is determined. He is getting good at crawling over anything and everything to get at what he wants.
-Has learned he can stand in the bath!!! Oh what fun!!!! Never mind it's slippery and he falls and I have to basically hold him and continually sit him down with the reminder "on your bottom in the tub!" because standing is too much fun!
-He likes to push things. His teacher told me he dumps toys out of the bins at school and pushes the bins around. He pushes baskets and tried to push Austin one day!
-He loves every long pointy object in the house and wants to put it in his mouth. And since he is our 2nd kid and our "spare" we let him go at it... have fun with the long pointy object! (I kid, I kid...)
-Bubble wrap and boxes are also awesome. Basically everything but toys are toys to him right now and every moment with him is about taking things from him, moving him or redirecting him.
-He likes anything to do with Austin, and likes to be around him and do "big boy" things with him. Riding in carts makes him bounce up and down on his butt and grin (after the bewilderment of Costco wears off) and he likes sitting forward in his stroller now.
So there you having it... 8 months of this kid. He's busy, he's loud, he never cries but screams, he bounces up and down in joy, screeches when you pick him up, grins and slobbers you with kisses, gets into everything and anything, gets frustrated easily and hardly sleeps.
Oh, Owen..
